The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) is an international, non-profit organization that undertakes scientific research for development in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
ICRISAT advocates a holistic approach to its research agenda of improving the livelihood of smallholder farmers and the environment by focusing on partnerships and market-oriented, sustainable and inclusive research-led interventions made possible by its multi-disciplinary scientific community.
ICRISAT is a CGIAR Research Center, with its headquarters at Hyderabad, India and research centers in sub-Saharan Africa (Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, Niger, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Ethiopia).
The BioNcube of ICRISAT is an initiative of the Agri-Business Incubator and Platform for Translational Research on Transgenic Crops of ICRISAT, and supported by the Bio-NEST Program of the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), Department of Bio-Technology (DBT) of Government of India.
BioNcube aims to create and promote agri-biotechnology (agbio) ventures through its proof of concept, prototype development and validation cycles for enhanced adoption using the technical capacities of ICRISAT and its partners.
Bio-NEST program was launched by BIRAC with a vision to foster biotechnology innovation ecosystem in India. The incubators established under the program offer enterprising ideas in the biotechnology sector with much needed incubation support to test their ideas, run their operations, have access to high end instrumentations and connect with other start-ups and mentors. So far, 50 such incubators have been created across the country, supporting over 690 start-ups.
